Architectural salvages use hardware, furniture and other period ware from old buildings to be restored and used elsewhere. No longer is this a hobby but a profitable business. Any item like brass handles, bronze hinges, door knobs or knockers are all precious pieces used to give newer homes a better or unique appearance.
Period hardware like brass bell pulls, hand forged iron hardware, antique cabinet hardware can be found with a few companies like Historical Restoration Inc, Located in Boston, MA, but more often than not these handmade 1970s work is hard to come by. Look for period pieces with Antique hardware shops and sellers first.
If you do not find the original antique piece then for this purpose alone there are antique dealers who specialise in reproducing antique or period hardware. Whether the house is a modern home or a colonial home, a Victorian home or just a hotel, these prized pieces will give them a unique look.
